Lecturer - ESOL and Maths - Harrow College
It is a privilege to be a part of the ESOL English and Maths team in Harrow College. I joined the college in 2017 as a Maths lecturer. Teaching maths is a challenge; however, I find it really fascinating to teach my students how mathematical concepts are linked to each other and are applied in real life.
As well as teaching maths, ESOL students take part in various enrichment and extra-curricular activities. For example, last year my Entry 3 vocational students took part in a fundraiser activity, which involved raising money for troubled nations in partnership with the British Red Cross charity. For the fundraising event, students used their maths skills to budget how much they need to run various (bric-a-brac and food) stalls in order to work out the cost and potential profit, with all money raised, donated to charity.
In addition, the College has supported me in pursuing a higher maths qualification to improve my knowledge and skills, by providing flexibility in my teaching timetable. This has been in conjunction with providing me full support to attend and successfully complete the CELTA course.
